How to selectively control which Android apps can access the Internet at any time

Is your monthly internet
allowance putting pressure on
your internet usage habits? Or
you simply want to block a bunch
of apps you have installed from
having access to the Internet?
That's cool. There's an app for
everything, and there's one for
that sort of functionality too. Meet
NetGuard, a free Android firewall acting on the
premise of selectively controlling apps' privilege of
accessing the Internet.

Before NetGuard, there was no way to pull this stunt
off without rooting. But with this app running on
Android 5.0 and higher, choosing which apps get
Internet access and which don't becomes a piece of
cake.

In this tutorial, we'll show you how to quickly and
easily set up NetGuard on your Android 5.0 device. It
will take no longer than 10 minutes and the process
requires no tweaks or roots — just installing a fine
app and getting it working!

How to selectively control which Android
apps can access the Internet at any time

1.
Grab the NetGuard application from the Google Play
store. This is a free and no-root firewall app that will
do the exact trick we want, which is being able to
block specific apps from accessing the Internet on a
whim. It's a pretty cool little app with a very up to
date look and feel, and we'll be getting to grips with it
real soon. For now, just install it and launch it.

2.
Hit 'Ok' on the disclaimer that pops up and proceed
to toggle the switch next to the NetGuard label to
launch the service. The app will display some
disclaimer-type info, so make it chill down by tapping
any Ok buttons in your sight. Also note the presence
of a key-like icon in the status bar, which indicates
that the NetGuard VPN is up and running, and let's
finally move into the app itself!

3.
Alright, now let's mingle with some settings! Starting
from scratch, NetGuard will block all types of internet
traffic to and from all the apps currently on your
smartphone. The presumption here is that you would
want to selectively let a small number of specific
apps have access to the internet. But if it's actually
the other way around, fret not. Simply flip the sides
by tapping the three dots button, heading to the
'Settings' menu, and deselect the first three options
— "Block Wi-Fi by default", "Block mobile by default",
and "Block roaming by default". You may also want to
tick the "Manage system applications" option in
order to have more control over Android system
apps' behaviour.

4.
The connection-blocking part of NetGuard is actually
straightforward as it can be. There are two toggle
buttons next to each app. One disables and enables
Wi-Fi traffic, the other deals with mobile data
connections. Simply tap the buttons — if the icon is
orange, it means internet is blocked. If it's green, the
app connects. That's it!

5.
If you no longer want to use the NetGuard firewall at
all, this means you'd want to uninstall it. To do just
that, first open NetGuard and flip the switch to
disable the service. Next, head to the 'Settings >
Apps" submenu and tap 'NetGuard'. Hit the Uninstall
button, and the application will be gone in a flash.
